2025 Ins and Outs

Happy New Year! The start of a new year is the perfect time to set fresh goals and embrace new habits. One fun trend that’s gaining popularity is making a list of “ins” and “outs” for the year ahead, so we wanted to share some of the ones we’re incorporating into our lives for our homes, kids, and families. Of course, not everything we suggest has to be an “in” or an “out” for you—this is about what works best for your own family’s needs. We encourage you to pick one or two things that resonate with you and run with them! Whether it's cutting back on screen time, prioritizing family meals, or introducing more outdoor play, small shifts can make a big impact on your well-being in the new year. Here's to making 2025 a healthier, happier year for everyone!

For your home:

Ins:

Air purifier

Filtered watered

Bamboo, cotton, or linen sheets

Safer cleaning products (we love Branch Basics or budget friendly idea would be vinegar and water and add essential oils)

Wooden cutting boards, glass water bottles, and glass containers

Turn off all main lights at 8:30 or 9:00 pm to start unwinding (This helps your body start to get ready for bed by producing melatonin allowing you to have a more restful sleep… while you're at it, turn off your screens too!)

Outs:

Cleaning supplies such as Clorox, Tide, Lysol, etc.

Plastic cutting boards, plastic water bottles, and plastic containers

Pesticides under the kitchen sink (bug repellent such as Raid and weed killer such as Roundup)

For the kids:

Ins:

Quality time away from technology

Mindfulness activities and emotional check ins

Affirmations

Crystal salt lamps

Protein rich snacks

Family dinners

Outs:

Unrestricted screen time

Artificial food dyes and preservatives

Negative self talk

Night lights

Running on nothing but sugar

For the whole family:

Ins:

Getting sunlight first thing in the morning to set your circadian rhythm

Daily family walks (meals after walks help balance blood sugar)

Protein rich meals (think protein, carb, fat, and green for what I call the “Fab 4”)

Grounding with the earth daily (helps reduce inflammation and regulate the nervous system)

Outs:

 Food dyes

Tons of refined sugars in diet

 Comparison to other families

Feeling overwhelmed yet? Thinking some of these switches seem daunting and really expensive? Focus on the things that cost $0 first. As a society, it has been engraved in our heads that we need more, more, and more. Starting with free things is a great way to embrace non-toxic living without overwhelming yourself. Begin with simple, natural habits like drinking plenty of water, which helps detoxify your body and keeps you hydrated. Take family walks in nature to enjoy fresh air, clear your mind, and strengthen bonds. Getting outside regularly exposes you to the healing benefits of sunlight and the grounding effect of nature, both of which can help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being. And don’t forget to move your body—whether it’s stretching, walking, or dancing around the house, regular movement supports physical health and boosts your mood. These small, free practices are powerful steps toward a cleaner, healthier lifestyle, and they’re a great foundation to build on for you and your family!

With love,

Kylie and Annie
